How to pass the Virginia knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Virginia manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Virginia law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Virginia written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 40 34 correct (6 mistakes allowed) 15 years 6 months
Motorcycle 25 20 correct (5 mistakes allowed) 15 years 6 months
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years

Car. The knowledge exam has two parts. Part one is 10 road sign questions and all ten must be answered correctly. Part two is 30 general knowledge questions and 24 must be correct. The combined minimum is therefore 34 correct out of 40, but the six allowed mistakes can only fall in part two.

Motorcycle. The Virginia Motorcycle Operator Manual states the motorcycle knowledge exam has 25 questions. DMV does not publish the passing score, so the 20 correct answers shown here are an 80 percent estimate and are not confirmed.

CDL. Applicants must be at least 18 to hold a Virginia CDL and at least 21 for interstate operation. Virginia does not publish the number of general knowledge questions, so the figures shown follow the common federal 80 percent standard and are not confirmed.
